The four-part debunking structure from the Debunking Handbook: state the fact, flag and state the myth once, name the specific reasoning trick that makes the myth misleading, and restate the fact, so the listener leaves with both the correct information and the means to spot the next version.

How to do it

  1. 1Fact: open with what is true, in a form that is as simple and sticky as the myth. If the truth is complicated, find the one-sentence core.
  2. 2Myth: warn that a falsehood is coming, then state it once. Do not embellish or quote its most memorable phrasing.
  3. 3Fallacy: explain how the myth misleads. Name the technique (cherry-picked time window, fake expert, false cause, single anecdote, impossible expectation) and show it in one sentence or an everyday parallel.
  4. 4Fact: close by restating the truth, and where the myth explained something (why the event happened, who was responsible), supply the correct explanation so that no gap is left.
  5. 5Match the messenger to the audience. A correction from a source the audience trusts, or one speaking against its own apparent interest, carries further than the same words from an opponent.
  6. 6Keep a respectful tone toward the person. The target is the argument; people who feel mocked defend the belief to defend themselves.

What to say

  • The last ten years were the warmest on record. You will hear that warming stopped in 1998. That picks an unusually hot starting year and a short window, like measuring a child in high heels and concluding they shrank. Over any period of thirty years the trend is up.
  • This supplement has not been shown to prevent colds. The advert cites "a study": it had twenty participants and no control group. One small uncontrolled study cannot show that. The larger trials found no effect.

When to use it

  • A myth that is already widespread in your audience and keeps returning.
  • Public-facing corrections by teachers, clinicians, journalists, moderators, and communicators.
  • Responding to science denial in a public discussion where onlookers matter more than the opponent.
  • Writing a durable explainer or FAQ entry rather than a quick reply.

Evidence and how strong it is

The structure is the central recommendation of the Debunking Handbook 2020 (Lewandowsky et al.), which summarizes the agreed findings of 22 researchers. Its components are individually tested. Johnson & Seifert (1994) showed that a retraction alone leaves misinformation influencing later reasoning, and that supplying an alternative causal explanation greatly reduces this continued influence, which is why the final step fills the gap. Cook, Lewandowsky & Ecker (2017) found that explaining the misleading technique (such as fake experts) neutralized the effect of misinformation about climate science across the political spectrum. Schmid & Betsch (2019), in six experiments on vaccination and climate, found that rebutting either the topic or the technique reduced the influence of a science denier on the audience, and that not responding was the worst option. Evidence strength: good for the components (multiple experiments), moderate for the full four-part package, which is a synthesis rather than a separately trialled protocol; corrections reliably reduce but rarely eliminate belief.

Cautions
  • Naming a fallacy can turn into a put-down. Explain the flaw in plain words with an example; do not recite Latin at someone.
  • Showing that the argument for a claim is fallacious does not show the claim is false (the fallacy fallacy). Make sure your opening fact stands on its own evidence.
  • Corrections fade and the myth tends to return. Expect to repeat the correction, and do not read a relapse as bad faith.
  • If the belief is part of someone's identity or community, a public correction may harden it. Consider a private conversation that starts with their reasons.
