Misleading Vividness

What it is

Presenting a small number of dramatic, concrete, or emotionally charged cases so that they outweigh statistically stronger but duller evidence about how common or serious something actually is.

How it works

Misleading vividness is the anecdotal fallacy with the volume turned up: the persuasive load is carried by how imaginable the case is rather than by how representative. Nisbett and Ross (1980) argued that vivid information — concrete, emotionally interesting, close in time and space — is weighted out of proportion to its evidential value, and Lichtenstein and colleagues (1978) showed that people overestimate the frequency of dramatic causes of death (homicide, tornadoes) and underestimate undramatic ones (stroke, diabetes) in line with media coverage. The science is more mixed than the folk version: Taylor and Thompson (1982) reviewed the laboratory literature and found the vividness effect weak and inconsistent, though it appears reliably when vivid and pallid information compete for attention, as they do in real persuasion. The honest version is a communicator who has simply been struck by a case. The knowing version chooses the case for its imagery, gives it a face and a timeline, and never mentions the rate: a single crime by an immigrant, a single vaccine injury, a single absurd regulatory ruling, a single shark. The tell is a story vivid enough to picture, standing in for a number you were never given.

Real-world examples

  • The 1988 “Willie Horton” advertisement used one furloughed prisoner's crimes to characterize Michael Dukakis's furlough policy; from 2015 onward, single crimes by undocumented immigrants were similarly used to characterize immigration policy, although studies of offending by immigration status generally do not support the implied rate.
  • From the other direction, single police killings have been presented as characterizing policing in general; the underlying rates and trends are a separate, measurable question that the vivid case does not answer either way.
  • Lichtenstein and colleagues (1978) found that people judged homicide more frequent than suicide and tornadoes more lethal than asthma, reversing the actual figures, in line with the vividness of news coverage.
  • Shark attacks receive coverage out of proportion to their frequency (a handful of fatalities worldwide each year) while drowning, which kills hundreds of thousands, does not; beach behavior follows the coverage.
  • Security vendors sell with a dramatized breach narrative rather than a base rate of attacks against firms of the buyer's size; the fear is real and the calibration absent.

Ethical guidelines

  • Pair every vivid case with the rate: say how often, out of how many, over what period.
  • Choose illustrative cases for typicality, not for imagery; if the most vivid case is atypical, say so.
  • Do not use a face to make a number disappear; if the number is on your side, show it, and if it is not, the case does not change that.
  • In risk communication, present absolute frequencies (Gigerenzer 2002) so that the vivid case can be placed against them.

How to defend against it

  • Ask for the rate out loud: “How often does this happen, per how many?” and decline to update on the story until the number is on the table.
  • Notice your own imagery: if you can picture the scenario clearly, treat that as a signal to check the base rate, not as evidence of frequency.
  • Convert to natural frequencies — “one in how many?” — which restores the scale that a single vivid case removes.
  • Compare the vivid risk against a dull one of known size (driving, stairs, drowning); the comparison recalibrates without disputing the story.
  • Remember why the story was reported: news covers what is unusual, so coverage is evidence of rarity, not of frequency.

Whenever you are shown a count ("4,000 complaints", "12 deaths", "9 out of 10 dentists"), ask "out of how many?", because a numerator on its own cannot tell you whether something is common, rare, rising, or falling.

Before accepting what a test result, a profile, or a striking detail seems to prove, ask how common the thing is in the first place, because evidence that sounds accurate can still be wrong most of the time when the underlying condition is rare.
