Single-Cause Fallacy (Causal Oversimplification)

What it is

Presenting one factor as the cause of an outcome that has several jointly necessary or contributing causes, so the audience accepts a single villain, a single hero, or a single fix.

How it works

Fischer (1970) called this the reductive fallacy: reducing complexity to simplicity, or diversity to uniformity, in causal explanation. The lever is a documented preference for simplicity — Lombrozo (2007) found that people judge a one-cause explanation more probable than a two-cause explanation even when the evidence makes the two-cause account more likely. A single cause also delivers a single agent to blame or credit, and a single agent implies a single remedy, which makes the story actionable and therefore attractive. Modern accident analysis moved the other way: Reason's Swiss-cheese model (2000) treats disasters as alignments of several latent failures, none sufficient alone. As a persuasion tactic the fallacy serves deflection (“the root cause was the contractor”), campaigning (“the crisis was caused by their policy”), and sales (“the one thing holding you back”). The tell is a cause presented without the other conditions that had to hold for the outcome to occur.

Real-world examples

  • The 2008 financial crisis is attributed on the left to “greedy bankers” and on the right to “government housing policy”; the Financial Crisis Inquiry Commission (2011) described multiple interacting causes, and both single-cause versions remain the popular ones.
  • The 1977 Tenerife runway collision is often summarized as “the KLM captain took off without clearance”; the investigations also cited fog, overlapping radio transmissions, an overcrowded diversion airport after a bomb threat, and cockpit hierarchy that discouraged the flight engineer from pressing his doubt.
  • Diet marketing cycles through single causes of obesity — fat, then carbohydrates, then sugar, then seed oils — each sold with its own single fix.
  • After every election, commentators announce “the election was decided by” the economy, turnout, one advertisement, or one demographic, when the margin required each of several factors to hold at once.
  • A software post-mortem names one engineer's deploy as the cause of an outage, leaving untouched the missing rollback path, the absent alert, and the review process that let the change through.

Ethical guidelines

  • When you name a cause, say whether it is the only cause, the main cause, or one of several — and how you know.
  • State the other conditions that had to hold for the outcome; a cause offered without its enabling conditions is a slogan.
  • Do not assign a single cause because it is the one your audience wants to punish or the one your product fixes.
  • In post-mortems and inquiries, resist closing on the first plausible cause; ask what would have stopped the outcome at each stage.

How to defend against it

  • Ask the three-word question: “only, main, or a?” — “Is this the only cause, the main cause, or one cause among several?”
  • Ask the counterfactual: “If X had not happened but everything else had, would the outcome still have occurred?” If yes, X is not the cause.
  • Draw the causal map (a fishbone or Ishikawa diagram works) before accepting any single branch; argument mapping makes missing branches visible.
  • Check who benefits from the chosen cause: a cause that conveniently exonerates the speaker or sells their product deserves extra scrutiny.
  • Ask what the multi-cause account would imply for the proposed fix; if one fix is being sold for a many-cause problem, the fix is being oversold.
