Logical
Gish Gallop
What it is
Overwhelming an opponent with a rapid series of many weak or dubious arguments, making it impossible to adequately address each one.
How it works
Real-world examples
- •Debate performances that rattle off dozens of points in rapid succession, preventing substantive engagement with any of them.
- •Social media posts containing 15 different misleading claims, knowing fact-checkers can only address a few.
- •Business presentations that overwhelm stakeholders with slides to prevent critical questioning of any individual point.
Ethical guidelines
- ●Quality of arguments matters more than quantity.
- ●Deliberately overwhelming interlocutors prevents genuine intellectual engagement.
- ●Presenting many weak arguments as a substitute for one strong argument is dishonest.
How to defend against it
- ►Don't try to address every point — pick the 2-3 strongest claims and address those thoroughly.
- ►Call out the technique directly: "You've made 20 claims in 2 minutes — let's address each one properly."
- ►Insist on structured discussion where each point gets adequate time before moving on.
