Persuasion Lab is built on established persuasion research — not folk wisdom, not self-help intuition. The tactics library, Manipulation Detector, and Campaign Hub all trace back to published work in social psychology, behavioral economics, and communication studies. Compliance & influence

Robert Cialdini — six (now seven) principles of influence

Cialdini's *Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion* (1984) and *Pre-Suasion* (2016) provide the modern taxonomy for how everyday compliance works: reciprocity, commitment/consistency, social proof, authority, liking, scarcity, and unity. Every technique in our tactics library is tagged against this framework so a reader can see which underlying principle a given tactic exploits.

Dual-process cognition

Daniel Kahneman — System 1 and System 2 thinking

Kahneman's *Thinking, Fast and Slow* (2011) is why persuasion works at all: most decisions run through the fast, associative, heuristic-driven System 1 rather than the slow, deliberate System 2. Manipulation techniques succeed by targeting System 1 shortcuts; defense works by moving the decision into System 2 for long enough to check it. Our Manipulation Detector is essentially a System-2 checkpoint for a message you were about to process on autopilot.

Inoculation theory & prebunking

Roozenbeek & van der Linden — building psychological resistance in advance

Inoculation theory (William McGuire, 1961) proposed that people can be "vaccinated" against persuasion the same way they can against pathogens: expose them to a weakened version of the argument they'll later encounter, and give them the tools to refute it. Sander van der Linden and Jon Roozenbeek's Cambridge Social Decision-Making Lab has spent the last decade turning this into evidence-based prebunking interventions — including the game *Bad News*, which teaches players to recognize misinformation techniques and measurably reduces their susceptibility. Their 2022 *Science Advances* study showed that short prebunking videos improved manipulation recognition in a real-world YouTube ad experiment. This is the academic banner over our defense-side product.

Persuasion knowledge

Friestad & Wright — the Persuasion Knowledge Model

The Persuasion Knowledge Model (Friestad & Wright, 1994) explains how consumers develop and use their own theories about how marketers try to influence them, and how they cope in response. It's why "call out the tactic in plain language" is one of the most durable defenses: making the persuasion attempt visible flips the target from passive System-1 processor to active System-2 evaluator. Our encyclopedia entries name techniques explicitly for the same reason.

Framing effects

Tversky & Kahneman — and George Lakoff on political framing

The 1981 Tversky-Kahneman "Asian Disease" experiments showed that logically equivalent choices produce opposite decisions depending on whether they're framed as gains or losses. Lakoff extended this into political discourse, showing that whoever sets the frame usually wins the argument regardless of the underlying facts. How the science shapes the product

Every technique has a defense

Cialdini's own research emphasizes that awareness of a compliance technique reduces its effectiveness. Every entry in our tactics library ships with a "How to defend against it" section for that reason — teaching the offense without the defense would mean shipping a manipulation manual, which is not what the science supports.

Real-world examples over lab abstractions

Where possible, we pair each technique with the historical episode where it was clearly deployed at scale — propaganda, elections, marketing campaigns, cult recruitment, litigation. Historical case studies come from the peer-reviewed literature and standard reference works in propaganda and communication studies.

Ethical guardrails encoded in the tool, not just the docs
