Exploding Offer

What it is

Making an attractive offer with an extremely short acceptance window, preventing the recipient from exploring alternatives.

How it works

The offer is designed to be good enough to accept but expires before the recipient can comparison shop, consult advisors, or develop alternatives. The time pressure converts a potentially competitive situation into a monopoly one — if you can't compare, you can't negotiate.

Real-world examples

  • Job offers with 48-hour response deadlines designed to prevent candidates from completing other interviews.
  • "We'll hold this apartment for 24 hours" in competitive rental markets.
  • Early-bird pricing that expires before buyers can fully evaluate alternatives.

Ethical guidelines

  • Exploding offers deliberately prevent informed decision-making.
  • The shorter the window, the more manipulative the intent.
  • Legitimate offers allow adequate time for deliberation proportional to the decision's importance.

How to defend against it

  • Ask for an extension — if the offer is genuine, reasonable extensions are usually possible.
  • An offer designed to prevent you from exploring alternatives is an offer that can't survive comparison.
  • Develop your alternatives proactively so you're not starting from zero when exploding offers arrive.
