Test any single argument by asking Toulmin's six questions of it: what is the claim, what are the grounds, what warrant connects them, what backs the warrant, how strongly is the claim qualified, and under what conditions would it fail?

How to do it

  1. 1Claim: state exactly what you are being asked to accept. Vague claims ("this policy is a disaster") cannot be tested until they are made specific.
  2. 2Grounds: ask what facts or evidence are offered. "What have you got to go on?" was Toulmin's own phrasing. Separate evidence from restatements of the claim.
  3. 3Warrant: ask what general rule licenses the step from those grounds to that claim. It is usually unstated ("experts in one field are reliable in others", "what happened there will happen here"). Say it out loud; many warrants do not survive being spoken.
  4. 4Backing: ask why anyone should accept the warrant. Is there a study, a statute, a track record, or only the speaker's confidence?
  5. 5Qualifier: ask how strong the claim should be given all this. "Certainly", "probably", and "in some cases" are very different conclusions, and persuaders habitually claim more certainty than their grounds allow.
  6. 6Rebuttal: ask what exceptions or conditions would defeat the claim, and whether the speaker has acknowledged any. An argument presented as having no exceptions is either trivial or oversold.

What to say

  • Suppose I accept those facts. What is the general principle that gets us from there to your conclusion?
  • How sure should we be? Is that "always", or "more often than not"?
  • When would that not hold?

When to use it

  • An argument rests on impressive-sounding facts, and you are unsure whether they actually support the conclusion.
  • Someone states a conclusion with total certainty.
  • You are writing or preparing an argument and want to check that it is complete.
  • An appeal to an expert, a statistic, or a precedent is doing all the work.

Evidence and how strong it is

The model comes from Toulmin's The Uses of Argument (1958), which proposed that practical arguments are better understood through this jurisprudence-like layout than through formal syllogisms. It is a staple of rhetoric, composition, debate, and science-education curricula, and it is widely used as a research coding scheme for the quality of students' arguments. Its standing as a conceptual tool is secure; its standing as an intervention is thinner. Studies of instruction in argument structure generally report better-formed written arguments, and the broader meta-analytic literature finds that explicit critical-thinking instruction produces moderate gains (Abrami et al. 2015), but those studies do not isolate the Toulmin scheme, and researchers have often noted that warrants and backing are hard to tell apart reliably in practice. Evidence strength: long-standing scholarly and teaching consensus about its usefulness as an analytic checklist; limited direct evidence that using it makes people harder to mislead.

Cautions
  • The categories blur in real arguments: one person's backing is another's grounds. Do not spend effort on labeling. The value is in the questions, especially the one about the warrant.
  • It analyzes one inferential step. Long arguments chain many steps, and you need a map to see how they connect.
  • It checks whether an argument is complete and proportionate, not whether the grounds are true. You still have to verify the facts.
  • Used aloud as a rapid series of demands, it can become a way of never conceding anything. Hold your own claims to the same six questions.

Draw the argument as a diagram, with the main claim at the top, the reasons for and objections against it beneath, and the support for each of those beneath them, so that gaps, repetition, and unsupported leaps become visible instead of being carried along by fluent prose.

Flow the Argument

Borrow the competitive debater's note-taking method: write each of the other side's points in a column as they are made, put the responses beside them, and look at what is left unanswered, so that volume and speed cannot substitute for substance.

Pick the Strongest Claim

When faced with a pile of arguments, ask the other side to name their single best one, or choose it yourself, and examine that one thoroughly, instead of chasing every point or knocking down only the weakest.

Pin the Bailey

When a position seems to change size depending on whether it is being advanced or defended, write down the bold version and the modest version side by side and ask which one is being claimed, so the speaker cannot enjoy the conclusions of one and the defensibility of the other.

State Your Position First

Before engaging with objections, questions, or someone else's summary of your view, say in one or two plain sentences what you actually hold and what you do not, so that the discussion is about your position and not a version built for you.
