Sacred Science
What it is
Lifton's criterion in which a doctrine is presented as simultaneously morally sacred and scientifically exact, so that questioning it is framed as both immoral and irrational.
How it works
Real-world examples
- •Soviet Lysenkoism: in 1948 the Lenin All-Union Academy of Agricultural Sciences declared Trofim Lysenko's theories the only acceptable biology; Mendelian genetics was denounced as bourgeois, and geneticists lost their positions (Joravsky, 1970). Nazi “racial science” performed the same fusion of doctrine and pseudo-rigor from the other end of the political spectrum.
- •Scientology describes its practices as “the tech,” and L. Ron Hubbard's 1965 policy “Keeping Scientology Working” instructs that the technology must never be altered — a claim of scientific exactness paired with a prohibition on revision.
- •NXIVM marketed Keith Raniere's “Rational Inquiry” as a patented scientific method for human potential; the 2019 trial record shows the method functioned mainly to rank members and license the leader's authority.
- •Multi-level-marketing “systems” and high-ticket coaching programs that present a proprietary formula as proven, then tell participants who lose money that they failed to apply it correctly.
Ethical guidelines
- ●A claim that invokes science accepts the burden of science: methods, data, independent replication, and the possibility of being wrong. Refusing that burden while keeping the vocabulary is misappropriation.
- ●Treating a method's failures as always the user's fault makes the method unfalsifiable, which is the opposite of scientific.
- ●Legitimate traditions can say which of their claims are empirical, which are ethical, and which are matters of faith. Blurring the three is the tell.
How to defend against it
- ►Ask the falsification question: what result would show this doctrine or method to be wrong? If the honest answer is “nothing,” you are not looking at science, whatever it is called.
- ►Check whether the “research” exists outside the group. Search the method's name in Google Scholar or PubMed and look for independent authors and peer-reviewed venues, not white papers hosted on the organization's own site.
- ►Notice who is blamed when the method fails. A system in which success proves the system and failure proves the individual has arranged never to be tested.
- ►Separate the moral claim from the empirical claim and evaluate each on its own terms. “This is good” and “this is true” require different kinds of evidence, and a group that fuses them is using each to shield the other.

Before defending a belief, write down the specific evidence that would make you abandon it, which turns the belief into a testable claim and exposes positions (yours or a persuader's) that nothing could ever dislodge.
Before taking or accepting a strong position, try to explain step by step how the policy, product, or claim actually works, because the attempt reliably reveals that you understood less than you felt you did and deflates the confidence a persuader was counting on.
Before arguing over who is right, ask what observation would count against the claim, and agree on it in advance; a claim that no possible evidence could count against is not being offered as a claim about the world.
