In-Group/Out-Group Bias

What it is

Dividing people into "us vs. them" categories to strengthen loyalty and hostility.

How it works

Humans naturally favor people they perceive as part of their group and distrust those outside it. Persuaders amplify this by creating or emphasizing group boundaries, fostering loyalty to the in-group while dehumanizing or dismissing the out-group, making people more compliant with in-group directives.

Real-world examples

  • Political rhetoric that characterizes the opposing party as enemies of the nation.
  • Brand communities that mock users of competing products (e.g., operating system wars).
  • Exclusive membership clubs that create identity around "being in" and looking down on outsiders.

Ethical guidelines

  • Build group identity around shared values, not shared enemies.
  • Avoid language that dehumanizes or stereotypes out-groups.
  • Encourage empathy and understanding across group boundaries.

How to defend against it

  • Notice when rhetoric paints an out-group as a monolithic enemy.
  • Seek personal connections with members of the "other" group.
  • Evaluate claims about out-groups by looking for direct evidence rather than accepting stereotypes.
