Quid Pro Quo Social Engineering
What it is
An attacker offers a service or benefit (help with a computer problem, a survey reward, a gift, a "free" upgrade) in exchange for information or actions that grant access, relying on the norm that a favor deserves a return.
How it works
Real-world examples
- •A caller working through a company directory says they are from IT returning a support request; eventually they reach someone who genuinely has an open problem, and the "fix" ends with a request to confirm the user's password.
- •Conference booths offering a prize draw in exchange for a form listing employer, role, and email address, harvested later for targeted phishing.
- •A "free security scan" pop-up that finds alarming "infections" and offers to remove them for a fee or with remote access; the favor is fictional, but the obligation it creates is real.
- •Romance and pig-butchering scams use extended reciprocity: weeks of attention, gifts, and apparent vulnerability build a debt the victim later repays with money.
Ethical guidelines
- ●Offering help or gifts as cover for extracting credentials is fraud; the exchange is fictional because the benefit was never real.
- ●Legitimate IT support never needs a user's password and should say so in onboarding, so that a request for it identifies the caller.
- ●Marketers who trade rewards for data owe disclosure of what will be done with it; a raffle that feeds a phishing list is not a promotion.
How to defend against it
- ►Reverse the direction of contact: if IT "calls you" to help, thank them, hang up, and open your own ticket through the official portal; real support will already be in the system.
- ►Give no credentials, codes, or remote access to anyone who initiated the contact, however helpful they have been; the help was the setup.
- ►Name the feeling: "I feel like I owe this person" is a cue to slow down, not a reason to comply. Obligation created by a stranger's unrequested favor is not a debt.
- ►Before filling in any prize or survey form, ask what the data is for and who holds it; if the answer is vague, the form is the product.
