Quantifier Shift
What it is
A formal fallacy of scope: sliding from “for every X there is some Y” to “there is some Y for every X” — from “everyone has someone they trust” to “there is someone everyone trusts.”
How it works
Real-world examples
- •Kenny (1969) showed that the Third Way of Aquinas moves from “everything that exists contingently at some time does not exist” to “at some time nothing existed,” which does not follow: each thing may have its own time of non-existence without there being a common one.
- •Campaign strategy in both parties reasons from “every swing voter can be moved by some issue” to a search for “the issue that moves swing voters,” which may not exist; the distributive premise is compatible with a different issue for each voter.
- •Product marketing: “every customer has a problem our platform solves” becomes “our platform solves every customer's problem” — the first is a claim about coverage, the second about a universal fix.
- •Root-cause analysis: “every incident had a cause we could have prevented” is read as “there is one cause whose prevention would have stopped every incident,” which is how single-fix programs get sold.
- •“Everyone has a price” is often heard as “there is a price at which everyone can be bought,” a shift that turns a cynical generalization into a business plan.
Ethical guidelines
- ●When your conclusion asserts a single thing for all cases, check that your premise did not merely assert some thing for each case; if it did, you owe an argument for the common one.
- ●State quantifiers explicitly in written claims — “each has a,” “there is one for all” — and do not let the ambiguity of ordinary “every” and “some” do the work.
- ●Do not sell a universal solution on the strength of distributive evidence; coverage across cases is not a common cure.
- ●When summarizing findings, resist compressing “each had a reason” into “there was a reason” for the audience's convenience.
How to defend against it
- ►Ask “the same one?” — “You say everyone has someone they trust; is it the same person for everyone?” The question makes the two readings visible at once.
- ►Rewrite the sentence with the quantifiers in each order and ask which one the evidence actually supports.
- ►Demand the identity of the common object: if there is one cause, one issue, one solution, it can be named; ask for it.
- ►Test with a small case: three people, three trusted friends, no overlap — the premise holds and the conclusion fails, which shows the inference is invalid.
- ►In strategy and sales, ask whether “solves every customer's problem” means one solution or one per customer, and price the difference.
