Affirming a Disjunct

What it is

A formal fallacy: from “P or Q” and “P,” concluding “not Q” — treating an inclusive “or” (at least one) as if it were exclusive (exactly one), so that establishing one alternative is taken to rule out the other.

How it works

The valid disjunctive syllogism runs: P or Q; not P; therefore Q. Affirming a disjunct inverts it — P or Q; P; therefore not Q — which fails whenever both can be true. In logic “or” is inclusive by default; in speech it is often exclusive (“coffee or tea”), and the ambiguity is where the fallacy lives (Copi). The lever is the mind's preference for single explanations (Lombrozo 2007): once one cause, one culprit, or one account has been established, the search stops and the alternatives feel eliminated, though nothing eliminated them. In persuasion the fallacy is a clearing tool: “the losses were due to the pandemic” is used to dismiss mismanagement, “the outage was a hardware fault” to close the software investigation, “the shift in votes reflects demographics” to dismiss a specific irregularity — or the reverse of each. The honest version is a reasoner who hears an exclusive “or” where none was intended. The knowing version frames the alternatives as exclusive from the start, proves the convenient one, and declares the inconvenient one refuted. It is the false dilemma's operational twin: the dilemma restricts the options; the disjunct affirms one to bury another. The tell is “so it was not…” following a demonstration that something else was.

Real-world examples

  • After the 2020 U.S. election, the claim that Joe Biden's margins reflected demographic and turnout change was used to dismiss every allegation of irregularity, and the claim that some irregularities occurred was used to dismiss the demographic explanation; both can be true, and the courts and audits addressed the specific allegations on their own terms.
  • Incident post-mortems: “either a hardware fault or a software bug caused the outage; we found the hardware fault; so the software is fine” — when the software's failure to fail over was the reason the fault mattered.
  • In medicine, “the fatigue is either depression or anaemia; the blood test shows anaemia; so it is not depression” misses comorbidity, which is common.
  • A company attributes falling sales to the pandemic and treats that as closing the question of whether its product had lost ground to a competitor; the pandemic explanation may be true and the product problem real.
  • In a dispute, “either he is incompetent or he is dishonest; the audit shows incompetence; so he is honest” — a conclusion the audit did not reach.

Ethical guidelines

  • When you present alternatives, say whether they are exclusive; if both could hold, do not let proving one stand in for disproving the other.
  • Do not use one established cause to close an inquiry into others; investigations end when the alternatives are examined, not when one is confirmed.
  • State “at least one” or “exactly one” explicitly in written arguments, contracts, and reports.
  • When you frame a choice for an audience, do not present a partial explanation as a complete one.

How to defend against it

  • Ask “can both be true?” — if the answer is yes, the inference fails, and the second alternative is still open.
  • Rewrite the “or” as “and/or” out loud and see whether the argument survives; if it needs the exclusive reading, ask what established exclusivity.
  • Distinguish “we found X” from “we ruled out Y”: ask for the evidence that specifically eliminates the second alternative.
  • In investigations, keep the alternative-hypothesis list open until each is examined; do not let the first confirmed cause close the file.
  • Recognize the clearing move in political and corporate communication: a true partial explanation offered as though it exhausted the question.
