Takes practice

Expose yourself in advance to a weakened, clearly labelled dose of a manipulation technique together with its refutation, so that when the full-strength version arrives you recognize the move instead of being carried by it.

How to do it

  1. 1Learn techniques, not just facts. A short list covers most of what you will meet: emotionally charged language, false dichotomies, scapegoating, ad hominem attacks, fake experts, conspiracy framing, impersonation, and cherry-picked data.
  2. 2For each one, look at a harmless or obviously exaggerated example and say aloud what the trick is and why it fails. The weakened dose plus the refutation is the active ingredient.
  3. 3Practise actively. Free games built on this research (Bad News, Go Viral!, Harmony Square, Cranky Uncle) put you in the role of the manipulator for fifteen minutes, which the studies found more effective than reading a list.
  4. 4Before a predictable wave (an election, a product launch, a health scare, a family gathering), ask what misleading arguments you are likely to hear and rehearse your answer to each.
  5. 5Boost it. The protection fades over weeks; a brief refresher or a second exposure restores it.
  6. 6Pass it on in the same form: "you are going to see posts that do X; here is how to spot it" works better than arguing about a claim after someone already believes it.

What to say

  • Over the next few weeks you will see stories built to make you furious at one group. When you feel that, check who benefits before you share.
  • Notice the move: it offers only two options. What is the third?

When to use it

  • Ahead of events that reliably attract disinformation: elections, referendums, crises, vaccination campaigns, financial bubbles.
  • Preparing children, students, employees, or older relatives for scams and manipulation they have not yet met.
  • Before you enter a community or media environment where you know a particular narrative is pushed hard.
  • When debunking after the fact has failed and you expect the claim to return in a new form.

Evidence and how strong it is

Inoculation theory originates with McGuire & Papageorgis (1961), who showed that exposing people to weakened attacks on a belief, with refutations, made the belief more resistant to later persuasion. A meta-analysis by Banas & Rains (2010) found inoculation more effective than supportive messages or no treatment across dozens of studies. Roozenbeek & van der Linden (2019) adapted the idea to misinformation techniques with the Bad News game and found that players rated manipulative posts as less reliable afterwards; Roozenbeek et al. (2022) showed that 90-second technique-based videos improved recognition of manipulation in large preregistered experiments and in a field test run as advertisements on YouTube. Maertens et al. (2021) found the effect decays over weeks unless boosted. Evidence strength: good (multiple RCTs, a meta-analysis, one field study), with two honest qualifications. Effects are small to moderate, and a reanalysis by Modirrousta-Galian & Higham (2023) argues that the games largely make people more sceptical of all news, true and false, without improving discrimination between them.

Cautions
  • Watch for blanket cynicism. If practice leaves you doubting everything equally, it has made you easier to manipulate, not harder; the aim is to tell reliable from unreliable, so practise on true items as well.
  • Technique-spotting is not fact-checking. A claim delivered with emotional language can be true, and a calm, well-formatted claim can be false.
  • Inoculation is content-neutral and is also used by persuaders to shield their audience from legitimate criticism ("they will tell you we are a cult"). Ask whether the forewarning comes with a real refutation or only with an instruction not to listen.
  • It fades. Treat it as a habit to refresh, not a vaccination you have had.
