Argument Mapping
What it is
Diagramming an argument as a tree of claims, reasons, co-premises, objections, and rebuttals so that the structure of support — what rests on what — becomes visible and can be checked one link at a time.
How it works
Real-world examples
- •Wigmore's chart method for trial lawyers, tracing how each piece of evidence bears on each fact in issue, is the ancestor of every modern argument map.
- •Kialo, launched in 2017, hosts public debates as pro/con trees in which every claim is a node that can be challenged individually rather than in a comment pile.
- •The competitive-debate flow is a linear cousin: columns for speeches, rows for arguments, with responses written beside what they answer.
- •A family deciding whether to relocate that maps “take the job” with reasons, co-premises (“the schools are comparable”), and objections finds the disagreement is about one co-premise, not about the decision.
Ethical guidelines
- ●Map the other side's objections as they would state them, attached where they would attach them.
- ●Do not bury weak links deep in a large map; the size of a map is not evidence.
- ●Keep the map revisable. A map that is only ever added to is advocacy, not analysis.
- ●A map makes structure visible, not truth; every leaf node still needs its own evidence.
How to defend against it
- ►When a conclusion feels like it follows but you cannot say how, draw it. The feeling of validity often survives only as long as the chain stays in speech.
- ►Ask “which box does this go in?” of every piece of evidence offered. Evidence that supports no specific link in the chain is decoration.
- ►Count the leaf nodes with no support beneath them. That count is the argument's real exposure.
- ►Before a consequential meeting, map the decision with the co-premises stated; most disputes turn out to be about a single unstated one.
