Argument Mapping

What it is

Diagramming an argument as a tree of claims, reasons, co-premises, objections, and rebuttals so that the structure of support — what rests on what — becomes visible and can be checked one link at a time.

How it works

Spoken and written argument exploits a limit of working memory: a chain of five inferences cannot be held in mind at once, so a weak third link passes unnoticed while attention is on the fifth. Mapping externalizes the chain. The practice has legal roots — John Henry Wigmore's 1913 evidence charts traced every inference from exhibit to verdict — and was formalized for informal logic by Monroe Beardsley in 1950. Modern maps enforce two disciplines. Every reason must connect to the claim it supports through a stated co-premise (van Gelder's “Rabbit Rule”: nothing appears in the conclusion that was not in the premises), which drags hidden warrants into the open, and objections attach to the specific box they attack rather than to the argument as a whole. Charles Twardy reported that a semester of intensive mapping produced critical-thinking gains well above the typical gain from a semester of undergraduate coursework, though the evidence base remains small. The technique has no deceptive core; its only abuse is aesthetic, when a large, dense map lends a thin case an air of thoroughness.

Real-world examples

  • Wigmore's chart method for trial lawyers, tracing how each piece of evidence bears on each fact in issue, is the ancestor of every modern argument map.
  • Kialo, launched in 2017, hosts public debates as pro/con trees in which every claim is a node that can be challenged individually rather than in a comment pile.
  • The competitive-debate flow is a linear cousin: columns for speeches, rows for arguments, with responses written beside what they answer.
  • A family deciding whether to relocate that maps “take the job” with reasons, co-premises (“the schools are comparable”), and objections finds the disagreement is about one co-premise, not about the decision.

Ethical guidelines

  • Map the other side's objections as they would state them, attached where they would attach them.
  • Do not bury weak links deep in a large map; the size of a map is not evidence.
  • Keep the map revisable. A map that is only ever added to is advocacy, not analysis.
  • A map makes structure visible, not truth; every leaf node still needs its own evidence.

How to defend against it

  • When a conclusion feels like it follows but you cannot say how, draw it. The feeling of validity often survives only as long as the chain stays in speech.
  • Ask “which box does this go in?” of every piece of evidence offered. Evidence that supports no specific link in the chain is decoration.
  • Count the leaf nodes with no support beneath them. That count is the argument's real exposure.
  • Before a consequential meeting, map the decision with the co-premises stated; most disputes turn out to be about a single unstated one.
