Fear of Missing Out (FOMO)

What it is

Triggering anxiety about being excluded from a valuable or enjoyable experience.

How it works

FOMO exploits social comparison and loss aversion simultaneously. When people see others having experiences or accessing opportunities they are not part of, they feel anxious about being left behind. This anxiety drives impulsive decisions to "get in" before it is too late.

Real-world examples

  • Social media posts showing curated highlights of events that make non-attendees feel left out.
  • "Invite-only" product launches that generate buzz through exclusivity.
  • "Only 3 spots left in this cohort" messaging on course sales pages.

Ethical guidelines

  • Do not fabricate exclusivity or scarcity to trigger FOMO.
  • Present opportunities honestly without exploiting social anxiety.
  • Give people genuine time and information to make considered decisions.

How to defend against it

  • Recognize that curated social media does not represent the full experience.
  • Ask: "Would I want this if nobody else were doing it?"
  • Make decisions based on your actual needs and budget, not fear of missing out.
