Embedded Commands

What it is

Hiding directives within larger sentences so the unconscious mind processes the command while the conscious mind hears only the surface meaning.

How it works

From NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming) tradition, embedded commands are instructions tucked inside seemingly casual statements. "I don't know if you'll FEEL COMPLETELY RELAXED, but..." The emphasized phrase is a direct command processed below conscious awareness. Skilled practitioners use vocal emphasis, pacing, and embedding to deliver multiple commands per conversation.

Real-world examples

  • A salesperson saying "I'm not going to tell you to BUY NOW, but..." — the command "buy now" is processed.
  • A therapist saying "You might BEGIN TO NOTICE changes..." — embedding a suggestion of change.
  • "You don't have to DECIDE TODAY, but many people find that..." — embedding urgency while appearing to relieve pressure.

Ethical guidelines

  • Covert influence techniques that bypass conscious processing violate informed consent.
  • Therapeutic use of embedded commands requires ethical training and client awareness.
  • Using embedded commands in sales or political contexts is manipulative.

How to defend against it

  • Pay attention to which words are emphasized or stressed — they may form a separate message.
  • If you feel compelled to act after a conversation but aren't sure why, reflect on the language used.
  • Learn about NLP techniques so you can recognize them when they're being used on you.
